A new world record: a solar cell that can convert 40.8% of the sunlight it absorbs into electricity. This is the claim of scientists working at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Currently, photovoltaic technology employed by NASA and the Department of Energy have nearly approached 40%, while commercially marketed solar cells convert less than 20%.
