The Vatican is taking action, driven by Pope Benedict XVI, to be more environmentally friendly. One of the Pope's major issues has always been the environment. 2,400 photovoltaic solar panels have been installed on the roof of the Vatican's Nervi Hall. This will generate enough energy to light, heat, and cool the Nervi Hall and other adjacent areas. The installation is the first of many to come. The Vatican states that they plan to use 20% renewable energy for their energy needs by 2020, and is expected to become the first carbon neutral state.
