Computer chip manufacturers Intel, IBM, and National Semiconductor are jumping on the bandwagon. Newly entering the solar industry, these computer chip manufacturing giants aim to bring new photovoltaic technology and make solar systems smarter.
So far IBM is developing a smaller solar cell with a lens that concentrates more solar energy on to a small area. This smaller solar cell combined with a new liquid metal cooling system, produces five times more electrical power density than what is generated by typical cells.
With IBM touted as one of the world's largest computer companies, and Intel as one of the world's largest semiconductor companies, future innovation looks promising.
